Contested Global Landscapes

A Multidisciplinary Initiative of the Cornell Institute for the Social Sciences

Thank you for your interest in the forthcoming International Conference on Global Land Grabbing II, co-organized and hosted by the Land Deals Politics Initiative (LDPI) and the Department of Development Sociology at Cornell University on October 17, 18 and 19, 2012. Please note that space is limited at the conference and attendance is only available by invitation.

For more complete information on visas, hotel booking, and other logistics, please refer to this travel planning guide (pdf)

A few last pieces of information:

The conference will be held at the Robert Purcell Community Center (RPCC) on Cornell’s North Campus. For decent directions and maps, see: If you put the name of the center and Ithaca, NY, into google maps, you will get a better idea of where we are. The RPCC holds all of our plenary and paper session rooms as well as good informal visiting areas, a cafe, and a convenience store. We will be down the hill on central campus for our two evening receptions, Wednesday and Thursday evenings – maps will be provided at registration. There is parking at the RPCC if you need it, but we have to sell you a parking pass – I think it’s 7 dollars a day, and you can pick it up at the registration desk.

We will have said registration table set up at the RPCC North Entrance from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Please come see us to check in and get your name tags and welcome packets – breakfast is available Wednesday from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. The table will remain open after 9:30 am but may not be staffed.

To get to the conference on the 17, 18 and 19, we will have buses picking people up at three stops:

The Clarion Hotel (if you are staying at the Ramada, please walk across the street to the Clarion)
Downtown Ithaca – the bus will stop at the public bus stop on Greene Street in front of the Tompkins County Public Library
Comfort Inn and Suites

TIME: The buses will pull out of these stops RIGHT ON TIME at:

Wednesday: 8:15 a.m.
Thursday and Friday 7:45

You can also get taxis and your hotel shuttle to the conference site, so don’t panic if you miss the bus! For your convenience, three Ithaca taxi companies are available (all conveniently owned by the same company, Ithaca Dispatch, (888) 321-1149):
Blue Light Transportation (277-CABS)
Cayuga Taxi (277-TAXI)
University Taxi (277-7777)

Note: to get from the airport in Ithaca to your hotel or other accommodations, please use these taxi numbers OR call your hotel for a shuttle ride if they offer one – there is a phone in the baggage claim area of the airport that will connect you to any of the area hotels if you have the shuttle service as part of your room; to get from the airport in Syracuse to your hotel or other accommodations, your best bet is the Ithaca Airline Limousine (; phone 1-607-273-3030 or 1-800-273-9197). You need to call ahead for a reservation, preferably 48 hours in advance. The cost is $80/one-way, or $110/round-trip (subject to change). We were unable to arrange a shuttle from the Syracuse airport as there was not sufficient demand.

Very, very best of luck in traveling and I hope to see you all bright and early Wednesday morning!
